Policy Statement on Scientific Integrity and Ethical Responsibility
The International Biometric Society (IBS) stands firmly for the principles of scientific integrity, ethical responsibility, and independence of research. In a time when science and evidence-based decision-making face increasing political, economic, and ideological pressures in many parts of the world, the IBS reaffirms its unwavering commitment to uphold these values as the foundation of our profession and of public trust in science.
As a global community of statisticians, mathematicians, biometricians, and biological scientists, the IBS:
1. Affirms that scientific integrity, transparency, and accountability are ethical obligations of researchers and institutions.
2. Rejects any form of interference that seeks to influence scientific outcomes, limit open dissemination of results, or marginalize voices.
3. Supports the creation and maintenance of institutional frameworks that safeguard the freedom of research and ensure that valid data, evidence, and analysis remain accessible to all.
4. Recognizes that the pursuit of truth in science requires diversity of thought, open collaboration, and respect for differing perspectives, all within the bounds of rigorous ethical and methodological standards.
Statement on Proper Conduct
The International Biometric Society (IBS) highly values professional and appropriate behavior at all times. This involves scientific and ethical integrity, as well as respectful conduct towards others regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearances, race, religion (or lack thereof) or beliefs. Members of the IBS, as well as everyone employed on behalf of IBS or attending events organized by IBS, are expected to endorse this position and they agree to be considerate in speech and actions, to respect others, and to refrain from demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behavior and speech, at all times.
Policy on the Use of AI during Meetings
The Society will use its own paid AI service to temporarily record in-person and virtual meetings and/or sessions. Not all meetings or sessions will be recorded. Recordings that are not considered important for the archive or for future distribution will be deleted no later than 90 days following each event. However, IBS tradition is to record and save certain events that are considered of long-term value or interest to the Society’s members for a longer period. In some cases, recordings of these meetings or sessions will be shared online through the IBS website or through other official channels. Occasionally, some content will be shared with a larger audience and/or offered in exchange for a fee (subscription or pay per view). Note that attendees at IBS events, whether virtual or in-person, are subject to the terms and conditions noted in our official policy on “Filming and Photography”.
The same AI service will be used to capture meeting summaries for the archive and confirm action items during events. Summaries will be saved rather than word-for-word transcripts, as the Society’s intent is to capture only content that requires further action or confirms official decisions. Note that other AI-based recording and notetaking services will not be allowed to enter IBS meetings. Any services attempting to enter an event, which are not managed by IBS, will be promptly removed. We ask attendees for their help in deactivating any AI services that they typically use before entering IBS events. Any questions or concerns regarding this policy may be directed to the International Business Office of the Society.
