    Distinguished Lecture Series - Paulo Canas Rodrigues

    **RSVP Only - No Payment

    Tuesday, November 18, 2025, 08:00 - 09:30 ET

    "From Inference to Intelligence: The Evolving Role of Statistics in the Age of AI"

    Abstract

    Artificial Intelligence is changing the way we analyze and use data. But behind most AI methods are core ideas from statistics: uncertainty, estimation, and learning from data. In this lecture, I will show how modern AI systems, from machine learning to generative models, build upon and sometimes challenge traditional statistical thinking. We will revisit concepts such as inference, prediction, and interpretability, and see how they appear in today’s neural networks and large language models. I will also discuss why statistical reasoning is essential to make AI reliable, transparent, and fair. The goal is to open a conversation about how statistics and AI can grow together, and how statisticians can shape the future of data-driven science.

    Paulo Canas Rodrigues is a Professor of Statistics and Data Science at the Federal University of Bahia and the Director of the Statistical Learning Laboratory (SaLLy; www.SaLLy.ufba.br). Paulo completed his Ph.D. in Statistics at the Nova University of Lisbon, Portugal (2012), and his Habilitation in Mathematics, with a specialization in Statistics and Stochastic Processes, at the Lisbon University, Portugal (2019). His research in time series forecasting, statistical learning, artificial intelligence, statistics, and data science resulted in more than 120 scientific papers in collaboration with more than 180 co-authors from 86 universities in 31 countries and delivered more than 180 invited talks at conferences and scientific seminars. He was President of the International Society for Business and Industrial Statistics (ISBIS; 2013-2015), President of the Brazilian Region of the International Biometric Society (RBras; 2018-2020; 2020-2022), and the Chair of the Special Interest Group on Data Science of the International Statistical Institute (2021-2023). Among other activities, he is the current President of the International Association for Statistical Computing, a Member of the Representative Council of the International Biometric Society, and a Council Member of the International Statistical Institute.

    Seventh Seattle Symposium in Biostatistics: The Role of Causal Inference in Biomedical Data

    Non-IBS Event

    Saturday, November 22 - Tuesday, November 25, 2025

    The field of causal inference has seen a massive expansion in recent years and is now one of the most active areas of biostatistical research. The concepts and tools developed in causal inference are intended to support practitioners in their quest for evidence on causal relationships, often critical for scientific progress. The symposium will address:

    1. how causal inference can be leveraged to inform the design and enhance the analysis of observational and randomized studies, including combinations of both;
    2. how causal inference has stimulated the integration of machine learning into statistical inference;
    3. how causal inference provides clarity on assumptions that suffice to infer causality from different study designs and informs strategies for sensitivity analyses.

    54th European Mathematical Genetics Meeting

    Non-IBS Event

    Tuesday, April 14 - Wednesday, April 15, 2026

    We are delighted to host this year’s meeting in Davos, Switzerland, from April 14 - 15, 2026

    Davos is the highest town in Europe, located at 1,560 meters in the Swiss Alps. It is known both as an international conference and sports destination. In April, the weather can be variable, ranging from sunny spring days to occasional snowfall, so participants are advised to bring warm clothing and suitable footwear.

    The EMGM is an annual scientific conference that brings together researchers working at the intersection of statistics, mathematics, and human genetics. EMGM 2026 will continue the tradition of fostering collaboration and innovation in the field by providing a platform for early-career and established scientists to present their latest research, exchange ideas, and explore new directions in genetic epidemiology, statistical genetics, and related disciplines. The meeting features invited talks, contributed presentations, and informal discussions in a collegial and interactive setting.

    We are happy that Dr. Tim Frayling, Joelle Mbatchou, Ph.D., Dr. Eleonora Porcu, and Dr. Marylyn Ritchie will be the invited speakers of the conference.

    Many thanks go to our sponsors, the Kühne Foundation, the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, the Austro-Swiss Region of the International Biometric Society, Springer Nature, and the Schweizerischer Nationalfonds SNF. Thanks to the Schweizerischer Nationalfonds SNF, we support the travel of 4 early-career presenters.

    We are looking forward to welcoming you in Davos!
