Who We Are

Devoted to the Development and Application of Statistical and Mathematical Theory and Methods in the Biosciences.

The International Biometric Society is an international society promoting the development and application of statistical and mathematical theory and methods in the biosciences, including agriculture, biomedical science and public health, ecology, environmental sciences, forestry, and allied disciplines. The Society welcomes as members statisticians, mathematicians, biological scientists, and others devoted to interdisciplinary efforts in advancing the collection and interpretation of information in the biosciences. The Society publishes two journals, Biometrics, reporting communications consistent with the Society’s mission, and, jointly with the American Statistical Association (ASA), the Journal of Agricultural, Biological, and Environmental Statistics (JABES).

The Society is organized into geographically-defined Regions, each with at least 10 members. The Society is governed by an Executive Committee of General Officers and a legislative Council representing the international diversity of the membership. Regions elect their own officers and governing boards.

Visit the individual Regional section of this site for links to the respective web sites. Information about the Society and Regional activities is also available from the appropriate Regional Secretary or from the Society’s International Business Office.

Biometrics

BIOMETRICS  is published quarterly in electronic form. Its general objective is to promote the use of statistical and mathematical theory and methods in the biosciences through articles describing the development of novel biometrical techniques and their application to new and ongoing subject-matter challenges. A centerpiece of most Biometrics articles is a scientific application that sets scientific or policy objectives, motivates methods development and demonstrates their operation.

Papers in the journal appear in one of four sections. The Biometric Methodology section presents papers that focus on the development of new methods and results of use in the biosciences. The Biometric Practice section contains papers involving innovative applications of methods and providing practical contributions and guidance, biological insight, and/or significant new findings. Reader Reaction papers refer directly to articles previously published in the journal, and Letters to the Editors provide comments and suggestions on the journal and its content.

JABES

The Journal of Agricultural, Biological, and Environmental Statistics (JABES), is published jointly with the American Statistical Association (ASA). The mission of JABES is to contribute to the development and use of statistical methods in the agricultural sciences, the biological sciences including biotechnology, and the environmental sciences including sciences dealing with natural resources.

Biometric Bulletin

BIOMETRIC BULLETIN is a quarterly newsletter containing reports on Society and member activities, letters to the editor, editorial commentaries, special features, and advertisements. The Bulletin provides a venue for members and others to express ideas on statistical and biometrical matters.

Meetings

The Society sponsors the biennial International Biometric Conference (IBC), held in sites throughout the world, bringing together statisticians and others interested in the development and application of statistical and mathematical theory and methods to the biosciences. The meeting program includes oral and poster presentations of methodological advances, applications to specific subject-matter challenges, and educational offerings.

Many Regions also sponsor regular conferences, alone or in cooperation with other Regions or societies with related missions. Both the International Conference and these Regional meetings afford members opportunities to present papers and to exchange ideas through formal presentations and informal contacts with fellow biometricians and other scientists.

Membership

Individuals can join the Society by sending a completed application to the regional Secretary in the appropriate geographical or regional area. IBS strongly recommends joining the Society through your local area Region or group. If there is no Region in your area, or for additional information about the Society, view the membership information page.

An annual membership includes electronic subscriptions to Biometrics, JABES and the Biometric Bulletin, as well as a variety of other benefits. Fees are determined separately by each Region and are paid directly to the Regional Treasurer or National Secretary. Fees collected by the Regions include a payment by each Region to the International Biometric Society to cover services, research and programs.
