The Biostatistics and Epidemiology Core (BEC) housed within the Division of Health Services and Outcomes Research (HSOR) at Children’s Mercy Kansas City is embarking on a multi-year initiative to enhance the depth and breadth of our academic research enterprise. Over the next five years, we will recruit several new colleagues to enhance our existing strengths and/or broaden our capacity to fulfil our mission to improve the health and care of children and their families locally, nationally and internationally. We are interested in identifying new colleagues with expertise to fill two roles: Senior Principal Biostatistician and faculty in Adaptive Design Methodology. Salary and rank will be commensurate with academic and mentoring achievements, funded research and/or scholarly publication record.

Senior Principal Biostatistician: We invite applications for one faculty position to lead the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Core and play a foundational role in the development of our division.

We are seeking accomplished individuals with established track records of scholarly publications, extramurally funded research, and an ability to provide mentoring and leadership to a growing group of biostatisticians and epidemiologists in an academic hospital setting. The successful candidate will make significant contributions to the Core’s research portfolio and lead its ongoing expansion and educational endeavors.

Candidates must have a PhD in statistics, biostatistics, or other related field. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Candidates should have evidence of at least 10 years of successful collaborative biomedical and/or health services research as demonstrated by a strong record of publication and extramural funding. Ability to contribute to one or more of the hospital’s strategic research areas of translational research, precision therapeutics, genomics, innovations in healthcare delivery, health services and outcomes, and analysis of high-dimensional data (genetic and standard “big data”) would be highly valued.

The Senior Principal Biostatistician will be expected to work collaboratively with faculty across Children’s Mercy, partner institutions, and the community. The Senior Principal Biostatistician will direct the development of educational programs, including ongoing professional development for existing Core members, enhancement of course offerings for faculty development and fellowship programs, and pre- and post-doctoral training opportunities in collaboration with local institutions.

Adaptive Design Methodology: We invite applications for one or more faculty positions (rank open) in the areas of Adaptive Design methodology, optimization, and statistical analysis.

We seek qualified individuals with expertise in one or more these experimental designs (e.g., SMART, MOST, MRTs) for studies investigating behavioral interventions, drug therapies, or devices. These individuals will have experience applying methodological frameworks and/or design approaches to research studies on a variety of topics. Successful candidates will conduct original research and/or collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams on study design and analysis methodology, including intervention optimization emphasizing effectiveness and efficiency, interim analyses, and determining appropriate evaluation matrices and decision rules. Candidates with experience in cost- and constraint- based design and optimization will be highly desirable. Successful candidates will be expected to educate other faculty on the use of adaptive designs in health research, publish peer reviewed papers and seek extramural funding for their research program. Candidates should have a PhD or other applicable doctoral degree in Statistics, Biostatistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Behavioral Health, or related field.


Consistently ranked among the nation’s best children’s hospitals, Children’s Mercy integrates innovative clinical care, research and academic advancement to transform outcomes for half a million children in Kansas City and across the globe. In 2018, the Children’s Research Institute received $150 million from the Hall Family Foundation and the Sunderland Family Foundation, the largest one-time gift ever made to a children’s hospital for pediatric research. Children’s Mercy’s Center for Pediatrics Genomic Medicine (first of its kind in a children’s hospital), Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutic Innovation, Center for Healthy Lifestyles and Nutrition, and the Center for Bioethics are well-recognized for their research and scholarly contributions and provide ample opportunities for research collaboration. Children’s Mercy serves as the Department of Pediatrics for both the University of Kansas Medical Center and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Schools of Medicine and our faculty hold appointments at one or both.
